Do I need a referral?

No, you do not need a referral to see a pelvic health physiotherapist. You are welcome to book directly. If you have been referred by your GP, consultant or midwife, please bring any relevant letters or reports with you. The exception is our pessary clinic, which does require a GP referral (see the pessary clinic section).

Is my health insurance accepted?

Most Irish health insurers provide some cover for physiotherapy, but the level of cover depends on your plan. We recommend checking with your provider before your appointment. We will give you a receipt to submit with your claim.

Question 3

Can I attend my appointment if I have my period?

Accepted Answer

Yes, absolutely. Having your period does not need to affect your appointment. We can, and routinely do, carry out pelvic floor assessments during menstruation, so you are very welcome to attend as planned.
That said, the choice is always yours. Some people prefer to reschedule if their flow is particularly heavy or if they would simply feel more comfortable at another time, and that is completely fine. If you would like to move your appointment, please get in touch by phone or email as early as possible and we will be happy to find a new time that suits you.

Question 4

What should I wear?

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. If an internal examination is part of your appointment, you will be given privacy to undress from the waist down and a sheet to cover yourself. Comfortable clothing is helpful if we are looking at movement or exercise.

What should I bring?

Please bring a list of any medications you take, any relevant letters or scan results if you have them

Do I need to shave or wax before my appointment?

Accepted Answer

Not at all. There is no need to do anything differently to prepare. Come as you are, and we promise we will not notice or mind.

Question 7

Should I have a full bladder for my appointment?

Accepted Answer

No, there is no need to arrive with a full bladder. You are welcome to use the bathroom before your appointment, and we will let you know if anything different is needed on the day.

Question 8

Can I have an internal assessment if I have a coil?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Having a coil does not affect your pelvic floor assessment, and it will not be disturbed.

Question 9

Can I attend if I have a urinary tract infection or thrush?

Accepted Answer

Please let us know before your appointment. We will still be able to see you for a consultation and advice, but we will usually wait until an infection has cleared before carrying out an internal examination. If you think you have an infection, please contact your GP or pharmacist for treatment.

Question 10

Can I bring someone with me?

Of course. You are very welcome to bring a partner, friend or family member with you to act as a chaperone or simply for support.

Question 11

Can I bring my baby?

Accepted Answer

Yes, babies are very welcome at postnatal appointments. It is helpful to let us know in advance so we can plan the session around you both.
